February 2018

Bike February 2018 issue

We turned up in the Yorkshire Dales a couple of days after a deluge. The fields in the valley bottom were still flooded, and mud and stone had washed off the fell and across the roads. And it was really nippy too. Here we are, up on the Buttertubs Pass, about to watch Nigel warm up by flailing on the kickstart of his reluctant Moto Guzzi Nibbio, while Ben amuses himself by riding his Yamaha QT50 shopping bike in circles.

I love riding in the Northern Pennines. Even with the temperature dipping down towards freezing, and even though I had to sweat to get my Mobylette to climb the one-in-six crawl up Cliffgate Road from Hawes. Doing it on a moped with a bunch of friends made it a top day out. The views were amazing and the soup and coal fire at The Tan Hill Inn warmed us up. Ride of a lifetime? I won’t forget this one.

This bumper issue of Bike has become an annual event. We add extra pages to the magazine and fill them with extraordinary stories of Bike readers’ rides from around the world, but we’ve still got room for a group test (Bobbers), the first and most authoritative rides on the new bikes (Kawasaki Z900RS, Triumph Tiger 1200), and there’s also a trip inside the British motorcycle industry.

It’s winter time, so sit back and get inspired for your 2018 bike trips. You don’t need to go to South America, or Norway, or British Columbia (but it’d be nice to). You can have the ride of a lifetime in Yorkshire too.

Wherever you go, take the time to take decent pictures, and tell us about the trip. Your journey could make it into next year’s Rides of A Lifetime edition of Bike.

Enjoy the issue.
